Series Overview
Becoming Nonviolent Peacebuilders is a multi-day series of training workshops designed for students, faculty, staff, and broader community members to develop constructive nonviolent skills. These workshops are being offered in conjunction with the Catholic Nonviolent Initiative, a program of Pax Christi International, which is a global movement dedicated to promoting active nonviolence as a core principle of the Gospel. By fostering a culture of peace, justice, and reconciliation, these workshops strive to cultivate the skills necessary to heal and transform both human relationships and our planet. Topics to be explored throughout the trainings include: nonviolent communication, active bystander intervention, restorative justice, unarmed civilian defense, and developing strategic nonviolent campaigns.听
The Faith, Peace, and Justice Program is co-sponsoring these workshops.

Active Bystander Intervention
& De-escalation (ABI)
ABI focuses on effective skills for assessing, de-escalating, and diffusing harmful or inappropriate behavior. It provides participants with the tools they need to quickly recognize when they are bystanders, evaluate the consequences for everyone involved, and take action. ABI & De-escalation training promotes nonviolent, safe alternative approaches for defusing harmful situations by engaging with the aggressor and those subject to harmful acts.

Unarmed Civilian Protection
UCP is an effective, nonviolent strategy for protecting civilians directly and reducing violence in conflict situations. This training equips participants with the skills they need to be part of an ongoing neighborhood safety team. Participants are trained to use nonviolent and compassionate methods to protect other civilians from violence, deter parties from carrying out threats of violence, and support local efforts to build peace. Skills learned can be used in many situations and settings, including but not limited to political demonstrations, accompaniment of those in danger, neighborhood conflicts, and international conflicts.

Strategic Nonviolent Campaigns
The skill of strategic planning is central to an effective nonviolent resistance movement, campaign, and conflict transformation. Participants will learn key components of strategic campaign planning and analyze examples. Such components can include strategic vision, strategic campaign goals, theory of change, SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) campaign objectives, sequence of activity, spectrum of allies, sources of power, pillars of support, and tracking impact. Participants will begin to develop a strategic plan for a nonviolent resistance campaign and get constructive feedback.
